Publishing Editor
About the role:
As a Publishing Editor, you’ll be crucial to the maintenance and development of our journals. Working in a close-knit team, you’ll focus on the peer review system – the process which ensures quality and validity of research papers submitted to the IOP for publication. Academics electronically submit research papers to us for consideration, which are then forwarded to leading academics in the particular field for assessment in terms of quality and significance. You’ll interpret the comments of these referees, making editorial decisions whether or not articles are suitable for publication.
Another element of the role is journal promotion: attending three or four conferences a year, raising the visibility of our journals to the scientific community and observing developments in a particular field.
You’ll also hone new skills and gain real breadth of experience assisting with the general running and promotion of the journal. Varied tasks include helping to commission special reviews and issues, liaising with the marketing department to design marketing materials and email campaigns, preparing reports on journal usage and performance, and preparing for Editorial Board meetings.
What you’ll need:
First and foremost, you’ll need a degree in physical sciences, maths or engineering to understand and best work with submissions you’ll receive – if you’ve an MSC or PhD, all the better. We know you may not have any work experience and that’s ok, but if you have, all the better. You’ve the ability to manage your own time and workload, you’re comfortable working to deadlines and your IT skills are top notch. As building relationships is a big part of the role, so you’ll need the confidence to engage with others, alongside the ability to express yourself clearly in both writing and person. You’ve plentiful initiative and work equally well alone and as part of a busy, supportive team. We’re also looking for the flexibility and enthusiasm when it comes to travel.
What you can expect:
If travel’s your thing, you’ve come to the right place – with us you can look forward to a great career without giving up dreams of far flung places. Though you’ll typically cover the UK, Europe and the US, both Asia and South America are very real possibilities.
You’ll also get involved in cutting-edge research, meeting well known physicists and working with leading researchers. It’s extremely rewarding – just imagine how it feels to be the first point of contact for ground-breaking articles from leading physicists. What’s more, every submission demonstrates that these professionals consider our publications a worthy medium for their work – clear feedback on quality of journals whose continued success you’ll play a big part in.
Finally, whether you’re working on one large journal or several smaller publications, you’ll be involved in every element of the process. After all, team work is key to successful publication, so we place real emphasis on working together and valuing everyone’s contribution.
