Ed Martin
Head of Network and Systems Performance
My role's all about balance - delivering a great service to the business that's in-line with IOP Publishing's vision and strategy, whilst minimising disturbance and maximising efficiency. I'm the one who makes the decisions for Networks and Systems, and ensure that solutions are delivered by my team, working on key projects to meet our strategic goals.
It's challenging and fast-paced - that said, IT usually is, wherever you end up working. The thing that's different about IOP Publishing is that the culture here is supportive with it: the company really does seem to care about you as an individual. Their attitude towards training sums it up for me - since I joined, they've helped me develop much more than my technical skills. I've leant to communicate better, negotiate and motivate a team, and have found out all about how the company works as a whole.
However, for me at least, there's more to working here than the business itself: the people are fantastic too. Everyone seems intelligent and friendly, and uniquely we're all pulling in the same direction. This isn't a place ruled by office politics, and I've many friends who I've met here at IOP Publishing over the years - many have moved on or changed paths, but we all keep in touch. I guess above all else, that's what makes it such a great place to work. And at the end of the day, it's nice to know that as a company we really are making a difference, and advancing the cause of science.
